Every Asian Immigrant Parents' Struggle and Their Wishes in a Westernized Society
4:40 PMEvery Asian Immigrant Parents' Struggle and Their Wishes in a Westernized Society.
Growing up with Asian parents, and being a first generation Asian-Canadian/American/Western - it comes with its fair share of a clashing of conflicts. On one hand you have parents who grew up, not only in a different era, but a different world. A world where you had to worry about surviving - food, shelter, are we going to live another day.
Where in contrast being born in a 'first world' country you have the luxury of being able to do what you want if you work hard enough. So you have traditional mindsets of the stereotypes of being doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, etc in order to make a living - and the reality is some Asian children listen and do whatever it is their parents want and it's essentially reinforced on to the next generation....
Happiness isn't held as a precedent when it comes to making decisions - it's all about sustainability; purpose, mental health, joy in life - those are all necessities and could be done without.
I'm not saying the old way of thinking is wrong but times are changing. Think about we, we as the generation of the internet; did not exist 50 years ago. Making money on the internet, e-commerce, what is all this nonsense you're talking about. At the end of the day, every Asian parent means well, the beatings, the yelling, the constant nagging are done to show that they care; even at times it seems like they don't and affection isn't really shown - I know that they do. But what I'm saying is that as more and more Asian households are being formed from the first generation of westernized Asians; their teachings, their way of child upbringing needs to adapt to its environment - adapt to the times. But at the same time we can't hate our parents because they're only doing what they know and what their parents know and if you look at it - it comes from a lineage of their parents do things to them etc. and etc. What I can do is say although they mean well - it's okay to follow your gut in whatever you do - and believe in yourself - isn't that what life is all about?
Family is always first but I'd say your own happiness comes a pretty close second.
